The death of 27-year-old housewife Rakhi Saha in Teliamura due to alleged medical negligence has sparked widespread outrage in the town. The incident has raised serious concerns about the practices of private healthcare providers and the lack of regulation in the industry.
Rakhi had been undergoing treatment by Dr T.K. Sarkar, a visiting physician from Agartala, for fluid accumulation in her lungs. On the day of her death, she was taken to Dr Sarkar’s chamber at “Janapriya Medical Hall” in Teliamura for a procedure to drain the fluid. However, her condition worsened after the treatment, and she was pronounced dead upon arrival at Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital.
The family of the deceased has accused Dr Sarkar of medical negligence and demanded justice for Rakhi. Locals in Teliamura have questioned why such a risky procedure was performed in a private chamber rather than a government hospital. Allegations of prioritizing profit over patient safety have been circulating in the town.
Teliamura MLA Kalyani Saha Roy visited the site of the incident and interrogated the owner of Janapriya Medical Hall, Sujit Banik. Police have detained Banik for further questioning as part of the investigation.
Speaking to reporters, MLA Kalyani Saha Roy condemned the incident and emphasized the need for strict action against healthcare providers who exploit patients. Dr Anirban Bhowmik of Teliamura Hospital confirmed that Rakhi was brought in dead and mentioned the procedure performed by Dr Sarkar. The exact cause of death will be determined after a post-mortem examination.
Rakhi’s body is currently at the Teliamura morgue, where a post-mortem is being conducted. The police investigation into the alleged medical negligence is ongoing, and the community in Teliamura is demanding accountability and justice for Rakhi’s untimely death.
