Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has spearheaded a unified front against the proposed population-based Lok Sabha delimitation, convening the inaugural Joint Action Committee (JAC) meeting in Chennai. The meeting, attended by prominent political leaders from various states, focused on articulating a strong opposition to the delimitation process, which they argue threatens the democratic representation of states that have effectively implemented population control measures.
Chief Minister Stalin, chairing the meeting, highlighted the core concern that a population-based delimitation would unfairly penalize southern states like Tamil Nadu, which have made significant strides in managing population growth. He emphasized the need for a “fair delimitation” process that acknowledges and rewards states for their successful population control efforts.
The JAC meeting saw a consensus emerge among the attendees, who expressed deep apprehensions about the potential repercussions of the proposed delimitation. They argued that such a move would undermine the principle of equal representation and create an uneven playing field for states that have adhered to national population policies.
Stalin also made it clear that the Tamil Nadu government, along with its allies, would explore all available legal avenues to safeguard the democratic rights of its citizens. He stressed the importance of ensuring that the delimitation process is conducted in a transparent and equitable manner, respecting the democratic fabric of the nation. The message from the allies was clear, a population based delimitation was a “Sword of Damocles” hanging over the southern states.
This unified stance from Tamil Nadu and its allies signals a growing political battle against the proposed delimitation, with significant implications for the future of federal representation in India.
