As the contentious Waqf Amendment Bill is set to be tabled in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, April 2nd, Assam Assembly Deputy Speaker Numal Momin has voiced strong support for the legislation, hailing it as a “great initiative” by Prime Minister Narendra Modi aimed at improving the welfare of underprivileged Muslims across India.
Momin’s endorsement of the bill comes alongside sharp criticism of the Congress party, which he accuses of historically exploiting the poor Muslim community for political gain. Speaking to reporters, he alleged that Congress has consistently prioritized its political interests over the genuine well-being of the community.
“The ideology of Congress has always been to exploit the poor Muslim community. They don’t want poor Muslims to get better facilities, better livelihood. At the same time, rich Congress people want to exploit these poor Muslim people,” Momin stated.
He further urged Congress to reconsider its stance and support the Waqf Amendment Bill, emphasizing that doing so would demonstrate a genuine commitment to the welfare of poor Muslims. “My advice to the Congress party is that they should come forward with an open mind…and they should support this bill so that they can prove that they are with the poor Muslim people,” he added.
The Waqf Amendment Bill, which seeks to reform the management and administration of Waqf properties, is expected to trigger intense debates in Parliament. Opposition parties, including the Congress, are likely to voice their concerns and reservations regarding the proposed amendments.
Momin’s remarks have added fuel to the ongoing political discourse surrounding the bill, highlighting the deep divisions and contrasting perspectives on its potential impact.
This debate has become a focal point of discussion about the treatment of the poor muslim community in India, and how the waqf properties can be used to help them.
