In response to escalating tensions with Pakistan following a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India has implemented a ban on Pakistani ships entering Indian ports. This decision was announced by India’s maritime authority, the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), in an order that also prohibits Indian ships from visiting Pakistani ports.
The DGS order, enacted “with immediate effect” and “till further order”, aims to safeguard Indian assets, cargo, and infrastructure in the interest of national security and the Indian shipping industry. The order, issued under Section 411 of the Merchant Shipping Act, grants the DGS authority to issue directions to ships to protect national interests.
While the ban specifically targets ships flying the flags of India and Pakistan, it does not apply to vessels sailing under the flag of any other country. Any potential exemptions from the ban will be considered on a case-by-case basis, particularly for ships already en route when the order was issued.
All Indian ports, Mercantile Marine Departments (MMDs), and other stakeholders have been instructed to enforce the ban immediately. The DGS order will remain in effect until further notice from the Indian government.
This move underscores the heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, with both countries taking steps to protect their respective interests in the wake of recent events. The implications of the ban on maritime trade and relations between the two nations remain to be seen as the situation continues to unfold.
