Farmers in the Kantaliya block of North and South Maheshpur are feeling disappointed despite a good harvest! Crops are being destroyed by pests!! One farmer expresses frustration to the office!!!
Farmers are the eternal providers of society. Despite the advancements in science and technology, alternative options have not been created for them in the ever-changing society. The progress of agriculture and farmers has not been as expected. Instead, a sense of hopelessness is evident among farmers. The ongoing Boro rice crop has been unexpectedly damaged – first, due to the lack of timely rain, and secondly, when the rain did come, some farmers were somewhat relieved. However, a week later, the rice crop began to wither and die in every field, with each field in the Kantaliya block of North and South Maheshpur agricultural fields showing a distressing scene. This sight has left local farmers and large-scale farmers who spend their mornings and evenings observing their agricultural fields in tears.
To address the issue of an unknown disease affecting the rice crop, officials from the Department of Agriculture have also held discussions with many other agricultural workers. However, nothing was actually done at that time. What had to happen, happened.
Now the harvest season has begun, and although this national disease is visible in most fields, farmers have started harvesting rice without properly assessing the situation. Speaking to reporters, Mihir Chakraborty from South Maheshpur, Babul Pal from North Maheshpur, Chandan Majumdar, Sajal Deb, Swapan Das, and many others expressed their concerns – now the harvest has started. It will be difficult to pay the workers their wages. This is because there is excess straw compared to natural rice, which means farmers will not receive even half of the money they would have earned from selling the crop. Farmers are now claiming that if the Department of Agriculture had made the use of disease prevention medicine mandatory in agricultural fields earlier, they might have been able to get some relief. This is the comment made by the farmers. They are now requesting that the Department of Agriculture provide some assistance in the upcoming Aman rice season, or else the farmers in these two areas will have a very hard time selling their crops. Now the focus is on how much support the government or the department can provide to the affected farmers.
