Explosions were heard across Tehran on Tuesday as Israel appeared to be expanding its air campaign on the city, five days after launching a surprise attack on Iran’s military and nuclear program. In response to the escalating conflict, the Indian Embassy in Iran has advised all Indian nationals and People of Indian Origin to leave Tehran for safer locations outside the city. Indian students have been relocated with the assistance of the Embassy, while some Indians have been helped to leave Iran through the border with Armenia.
Israel’s military has claimed to have killed Ali Shadmani, who was identified as Iran’s wartime chief of staff and the most senior military commander. The Group of Seven countries meeting in Canada have called for a de-escalation of the conflict between Israel and Iran, while reaffirming their stance that Iran should not be allowed to possess nuclear weapons.
Israel has justified its attacks on Iran’s military leaders, nuclear scientists, uranium enrichment sites, and ballistic missile program as necessary measures to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. The strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 224 people since Friday, further intensifying the already volatile situation between the two nations.
