Tianjin (China): In a significant diplomatic development, India signed the Tianjin Declaration at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, marking what officials described as a major strategic win for New Delhi on the global stage.
The declaration, adopted during the 25th SCO Summit in Tianjin, underscores member states’ commitment to regional security, economic cooperation, and the fight against terrorism. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who attended the summit alongside leaders from China, Russia, Pakistan, and other SCO nations, hailed the outcome as a step forward for collective stability and development.
Diplomatic sources said India played a “pivotal role” in shaping the declaration, particularly in ensuring that the language around counterterrorism and zero tolerance for extremism reflected India’s long-standing position. This is being seen as a diplomatic victory for India, especially as Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was also present during the negotiations.
“The Tianjin Declaration strengthens India’s voice in the international fight against terrorism and affirms our role as a key partner in regional peace and development,” a senior Indian official noted.
The signing of the declaration comes at a time when India is looking to expand its influence in multilateral platforms and project itself as a stabilizing power in Asia.
