The tragic stampede at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay’s campaign rally in Karur has left a total of 41 people dead, with the recent passing of a 65-year-old woman named Suguna. The woman had been on ventilator support at a local hospital before succumbing to her injuries.
The victims of the stampede include 18 women, 13 men, five young girls, and five young boys. While most of the victims were residents of Karur, others came from nearby districts such as Erode, Tiruppur, Dindigul, and Salem.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening when a massive crowd gathered at Vijay’s rally, leading to a state of panic and chaos. Many individuals fainted on the spot and had to be rushed to hospitals, where medical teams worked tirelessly to save lives.
Actor-politician Vijay expressed his deep sorrow over the tragedy, stating that he was speechless in the face of such a loss. He announced financial assistance of ₹20 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹2 lakh for the injured.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also offered his condolences, announcing an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has promised state-level relief efforts, pledging Rs10 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives and Rs1 lakh for the injured.
Authorities are currently focused on relief efforts and are conducting investigations into the failures of crowd management that led to the tragic stampede.
