Agartala, Tripura: The second death anniversary of veteran leader Surajit Dutta was observed with deep respect across the Ramnagar Assembly constituency on Saturday. Paying tribute at the Ramnagar Mandal Office, Agartala Mayor and local MLA Dipak Majumder described Surajit Dutta as a “true people’s leader” who worked for everyone beyond party lines.
Speaking on the occasion, Dipak Majumder said that Surajit Dutta was not confined to any single political identity but devoted his life to public service. “His contributions to Ramnagar and the people of Tripura will never be forgotten. Till his last days, he remained committed to serving the people,” he said.
Majumder also informed that a programme scheduled to be held later in the evening at the Border Gol Chakkar area in memory of Surajit Dutta was postponed due to the demise of the Hon’ble Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly Biswabandhu Sen. He announced that a memorial meeting will now be organised on December 29 at Border Gol Chakkar, where Chief Minister Manik Saha has been invited as the main speaker. MLA Ratan Chakraborty, a close friend of Surajit Dutta, along with other leaders, will also address the gathering.
Surajit Dutta passed away on December 27, 2023, after prolonged illness at a hospital in Kolkata. On his second death anniversary, homage was paid across the Ramnagar Assembly constituency, with tributes offered at every booth. In the morning, floral tributes were laid at his portrait at the Ramnagar Mandal Office by Dipak Majumder.
Among those present at the tribute programme were Corporator Nitu Guhna Dey, nominated Corporator Manoj Kanti Deb, minority leader Jasim Uddin, Ramnagar Mandal President Amitava Bhattacharjee, and others.
Surajit Dutta enjoyed remarkable popularity not only in Ramnagar but across Tripura. He was first elected as an MLA in the 1988 Tripura Assembly elections representing the Indian National Congress and served as a minister in the Congress–TUJS government led by Sudhir Ranjan Majumdar. He went on to win four consecutive elections on a Congress ticket in 1993, 1998, 2003, and 2008, securing five consecutive terms as an MLA.
In the 2013 Assembly elections, he was defeated by CPI(M) candidate Ratan Das. After joining the Bharatiya Janata Party, he reclaimed the Ramnagar seat in the 2018 elections and went on to win again on a BJP ticket in the 2023 Assembly elections.
Leaders and supporters recalled Surajit Dutta’s enduring legacy as a mass leader whose life and work continue to inspire people across political boundaries.
