Agartala | February 5, 2026 Reported by: Tripura 24 Desk
In a powerful display of dissent, the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) took to the streets of Agartala today to voice their vehement opposition to the Union Budget 2026-27. The iconic Paradise Chowmuhani area became a sea of red as members of the organization gathered to condemn what they termed a “visionless and anti-women” fiscal plan.
Jharna Das Baidya Slams Center and State
Leading the charge was veteran leader and AIDWA Central Committee member Jharna Das Baidya. Addressing the gathering amidst spirited slogans, the former parliamentarian spared no words in her critique of both the Modi-led Central Government and the Manik Saha-led State Government.
“This budget is not for the mothers and sisters of this country; it is a gift for corporate houses,” Baidya declared. “While the prices of essential commodities—from cooking gas to food grains—are skyrocketing, the government has failed to provide any relief in the budget. It is a direct attack on the kitchen of every household.”
Systematic Failures Highlighted by AIDWA
The protest highlighted several “scientific and systematic” failures in the current economic policy, which the organization believes are detrimental to the socio-economic fabric of Tripura:
- Drastic Cuts in Social Welfare: The leaders pointed out significant reductions in allocations for the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) and mid-day meal schemes, which are crucial for the health of women and children in rural Tripura.
- Unemployment Crisis: Baidya criticized the lack of a roadmap for job creation, noting that the youth of the North-East are being left in the lurch with no specific industrial or skill-development initiatives in the budget.
- Neglect of the North-East: The organization alleged that despite the “Act East” rhetoric, the budget lacks concrete financial backing for the development of infrastructure and tribal welfare in the state.
The Scene at Paradise Chowmuhani
The protest, which saw hundreds of women participants, briefly disrupted traffic at the busy junction. Protesters were seen holding placards demanding a roll-back on GST for life-saving drugs and an increase in the honorarium for Anganwadi and ASHA workers.
The demonstration concluded with a warning from the AIDWA leadership: if the government does not address these grievances and amend its “pro-corporate” stance, the organization will intensify its movement across every sub-division of Tripura in the coming days.
