Agartala | February 5, 2026 Reported by: Tripura 24 News Desk
In a major success for the ongoing “Nisha Mukt Tripura” (Drug-Free Tripura) campaign, the West Agartala and Ramnagar police units conducted a joint late-night operation on Wednesday, leading to the arrest of two notorious heroin peddlers. The duo was intercepted in the dark alleys behind the Pragati School area, a location that has reportedly been under police surveillance for suspected illegal activities.
The Midnight Raid
Acting on precise intelligence regarding a drug transaction, a special police team led by West Agartala Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rana Chatterjee and personnel from the Ramnagar Outpost cordoned off the area behind the school. The suspects, caught by surprise, were unable to flee the scene.
Details of the Operation:
- Arrested Individuals: The accused have been identified as Bunty Nayek and Sujit Roy, both residents of the Radhanagar area.
- Seized Contraband: Police recovered a significant quantity of heroin packed in small plastic vials.
- Market Value: According to OC Rana Chatterjee, the estimated black-market value of the seized drugs is well over ₹1 Lakh.
Targeting the Youth
OC Rana Chatterjee, while addressing the media, highlighted a concerning trend: drug peddlers are increasingly setting up points near educational institutions to target local youth and students.
“We had been receiving specific complaints about suspicious movements behind Pragati School for several days,” said OC Chatterjee. “Following a systematic surveillance of the area, we launched the raid last night. This arrest is a significant step, as these individuals were not just sellers but key links in a local distribution network.”
Next Steps in the Investigation
The police have registered a case against the two suspects under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Preliminary interrogation has already provided investigators with crucial leads regarding the “wholesale” suppliers who bring the contraband into the capital from border regions.
The accused were produced before the local court today, where the police sought their remand for further interrogation to unmask the larger kingpins operating in the West Tripura district.
