Agartala | February 5, 2026 Reported by: Tripura 24 News Desk
While Agartala strives to drape itself in the “Smart City” tag, the ground reality for its citizens is becoming a saga of “Smart Harassment.” In a shocking display of administrative apathy, a massive crater has been left open for nearly four months at the busy RMS Chowmuhani, directly opposite the News Vanguard office.
A “Mystery Hole” Paralyzing Local Business
The excavation, which appeared nearly 120 days ago, has become a permanent fixture of the landscape. Despite the central location, neither the Agartala Smart City Limited (ASCL) nor the contracted agencies have provided any clarity on why the road was dug up or when it will be restored.
For local traders and shopkeepers, the “patience threshold” has finally been breached. Fearing political backlash, many remained silent for months, but the mounting losses and safety hazards have finally forced them to speak out to the media.
Voice of the Victims: “Our Businesses Are Dying”
Speaking to Tripura 24, local businessmen shared their harrowing experiences:
- Hazardous Access: The giant gap in the road makes it nearly impossible for customers to reach shops. Footfall has dropped by more than 60% in the last quarter.
- Accident Zone: During evening hours, the area becomes a death trap for two-wheelers and pedestrians, as there is insufficient lighting or safety barricading around the pit.
- Environmental Nuisance: With the onset of dry winds, the excavated soil creates a constant dust cloud, leading to respiratory issues for those working in the vicinity.
“We are paying our taxes and trade licenses on time, but what are we getting in return? A massive hole in front of our shops,” lamented a local vendor. “They call this a Smart City, but leaving a main road dug up for four months is the height of administrative stupidity.”
Where is the Accountability?
The situation at RMS Chowmuhani highlights a systematic failure in project management. Usually, “Smart City” projects are expected to follow strict timelines. However, the lack of a “Work in Progress” board or an estimated completion date has left the public in the dark.
Residents are now questioning if the leaders who promised a “New Agartala” are aware of the daily struggle at this crucial junction. The silence of the local ward representatives has only added to the public’s frustration.
The People’s Demand
The local community has issued an ultimatum to the Agartala Municipal Corporation and the Smart City authorities: Fill the hole and restore the road within the next 7 days, or face a massive public agitation.
