In a high-decibel press interaction today, Tipra Motha Supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma broke his silence on several burning issues currently shaping the political landscape of Tripura. Addressing the media, the royal scion-turned-politician delivered a direct message to both the State and Central governments regarding the TTAADC Elections, the Kokborok Roman Script controversy, and the status of the Delhi Tripartite Agreement.
“No Compromise on Roman Script”
Reiterating his “non-negotiable” stance, Pradyot Kishore slammed those attempting to polarize the linguistic debate. He asserted that the choice of script is a fundamental right of the indigenous people and not a subject for external political dictation.
“Tiprasa students are suffering every year during examinations because of the script confusion,” Pradyot stated. “If ministers can send their children to English-medium schools, why are they denying the Roman script to our tribal children? This is about our identity and our future. We will not back down until the Roman script is officially recognized for Kokborok.”
Implementation of the Delhi Accord
The “Bubagra” expressed growing impatience with the delay in executing the Tripartite Agreement (Tiprasa Accord) signed in New Delhi. He noted that while Tipra Motha joined the government as a partner to facilitate work from within, his primary loyalty remains to the “Dofa” (the community).
- Time-Bound Solution: He reminded the Centre that the agreement promised a “time-bound” resolution to land rights, political autonomy, and economic development for the indigenous people.
- The “Wait” is Over: “Our patience is being tested. Joining the cabinet does not mean we have sold our soul. If the promises made in Delhi are not fulfilled on the ground, I will not hesitate to return to the path of mass movement,” he warned.
Focus on TTAADC Elections
With the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections on the horizon, the Tipra Motha chief sounded the battle cry. He dismissed claims of a BJP sweep, alleging that a conspiracy is afoot to weaken the powers of the ADC.
- Land Rights: He highlighted recent concerns over tribal land alienation and vowed that the TTAADC would remain the “fortress” of indigenous protection.
- Unity Call: He urged all Tiprasa people to stay united against “divide and rule” tactics, emphasizing that the upcoming elections are not just about seats, but about the survival of the Sixth Schedule powers.
A Systematic Challenge to the Alliance
Observers note that Pradyot’s sharp tone today indicates a growing rift within the ruling alliance. By placing the Roman script and the Delhi Accord at the forefront, he has effectively put the pressure back on Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and the Union Home Ministry.
