EVENING CRACKDOWN AT ORIENT CHOWMUHANI: AMC Drive Targets “Guruji Conference Hall” Encroachments; Heated Face-off Between Officials and Owners
Agartala | February 6, 2026 Reported by: Tripura 24 News Desk
As part of the ongoing statewide mission to reclaim public spaces, the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) task force launched a surprise evening raid in the high-traffic Orient Chowmuhani area today. The operation, aimed at clearing footpaths and beautifying the city’s major intersections, led to a tense standoff when municipal officials targeted a prominent local venue.
The Flashpoint: Guruji Conference Hall
The tension escalated when the AMC enforcement team arrived in front of the Guruji Conference Hall. Officials noted that several large flower pots and decorative structures had been placed on the footpath, effectively obstructing the free movement of pedestrians.
Key Incidents from the Raid:
- Seizure of Items: Acting on orders to clear all unauthorized obstructions, the municipal team began removing the flower pots.
- Heated Altercation: The action was met with immediate resistance from the owners and staff of the Guruji Conference Hall. A sharp verbal exchange (Bak-Bitanda) broke out between the hall management and the AMC task force members.
- Management’s Defense: The owners argued that the pots were for “city beautification” and did not hinder traffic, while AMC officials maintained that any structure on a public footpath without a permit is an illegal encroachment.
Mayor’s Directive: “No Special Treatment”
The drive comes on the heels of Mayor Dipak Majumder’s recent announcement that the city must be cleared of all blockages—whether commercial stalls or decorative items—to ensure Agartala becomes a “truly smart city.”
AMC officials at the site clarified that the evening raids are designed to catch violators who re-occupy footpaths after regular office hours. “Rules are uniform for everyone. Whether it is a roadside vendor or a large conference hall, the footpath belongs to the public,” an AMC supervisor stated during the heated exchange.
Current Situation at Orient Chowmuhani
Despite the protest from the hall management, the AMC team successfully cleared the stretch. Extra police personnel were briefly called in to prevent the verbal spat from turning into a physical altercation. The area remained under surveillance throughout the evening to ensure the seized items were not replaced.
