Agartala: In a move to escalate the ongoing resistance against the central government’s recent agrarian and labor policies, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), Tripura State Unit, hosted a crucial press conference today. The briefing served as a platform to outline the state-wide organizational programs scheduled for February 11, 2026, which will serve as the final countdown to the mega All India General Strike on February 12.
Addressing the media at the Paradise Chowmuhani party office, senior farmer leaders, including Pabitra Kar and Subrata Chakraborty, issued a stern warning that the agrarian crisis in Tripura has reached a tipping point due to “corporate-friendly” policies and the dilution of social safety nets.
The February 11 “Village-to-Village” Outreach
The SKM leaders announced that on February 11, thousands of farmers and agricultural workers will organize ‘Prachar Abhiyan’ (Campaign Rallies) and Padyatras across every subdivision of Tripura. The goal is to sensitize the rural population about the “betrayals” in the recent Union Budget 2026-27 and the proposed India-US trade deals.
“February 11 is our day of mass mobilization. We will go door-to-door to explain how the repeal of the MGNREGA and the introduction of the Seeds Bill 2025 will enslave our farmers to multinational corporations,” stated a senior SKM representative during the press meet.
Core Demands Highlighted in the Press Conference:
- Legal Guarantee of MSP: Reiteration of the demand for a law ensuring Minimum Support Price (MSP) based on the C2+50% formula.
- Protest Against VB-G RAM G: Demand for the restoration of the original MGNREGA 2005 and a rejection of the new mission-based employment scheme.
- Scrapping the Electricity (Amendment) Bill 2025: Leaders alleged that the bill aims to privatize the power sector, leading to the withdrawal of electricity subsidies for farmers.
- Debt Relief: A demand for a comprehensive loan waiver for small and marginal farmers in Tripura.
Call for “Total Shutdown” on February 12
The press conference concluded with a clarion call to all sections of society—including students, traders, and government employees—to support the National Strike on February 12. The SKM leadership emphasized that the February 11 programs are essential to ensure a “total shutdown” of markets and offices the following day.
The leaders also condemned the central government for its “pro-corporate” stance in international trade negotiations, which they claim will flood Indian markets with highly subsidized foreign agricultural products.
