The two-day Biennial State Conference of the Tripura Working Journalists’ Association (TWJA) commenced today with great fervor at the Bhagat Singh Youth Hostel (Juba Awas) in Agartala. The prestigious event, which brings together media professionals from across the state, was formally inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha.
Media as the Mirror of Society
Addressing the inaugural session, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha emphasized the critical role of journalists in a healthy democracy. He described the media as the “mirror of society” and urged journalists to maintain accuracy and social responsibility in their reporting.
The CM highlighted several key points:
- Journalist Welfare: He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to ensuring the safety, security, and dignity of media persons.
- Tackling Misinformation: The CM spoke about the challenges posed by fake news in the digital age and encouraged the association to hold workshops for budding journalists to instill ethical practices.
- Positive Journalism: He requested the media to highlight developmental works while providing constructive criticism to help the administration improve its services.
Presence of Dignitaries
The inaugural ceremony was also graced by the Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Tinku Roy, who lauded the TWJA for its long-standing history of representing the journalistic community in Tripura. Other notable attendees included:
- Ananda Pulipalupula: National Secretary of the Indian Federation of Working Journalists Association (IFWJA), who attended as a special guest.
- Sunil Debnath: Secretary of TWJA, who presented the outline for the two-day convention.
- Senior journalists and editors from various media houses across the state.
Workshop and Technical Sessions
Following the formal inauguration, the conference moved into technical sessions and a media workshop. Renowned journalists and resource persons led discussions on the evolving landscape of digital journalism and the importance of international cooperation in reporting global issues like climate change.
The conference is set to conclude tomorrow, February 15, with a delegates’ session where a new executive state committee for the TWJA will be constituted.
