Following a landmark legal development regarding local governance in the state, Tipra Motha Supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma landed at the MBB Airport in Agartala today. Immediately after his arrival, the royal scion addressed a throng of media personnel, sharing his initial reactions to the Supreme Court’s recent verdict concerning the long-overdue Village Council Elections in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).
A Victory for Grassroots Democracy
The Supreme Court has been hearing a petition regarding the delay in conducting elections for the 587 Village Councils under the TTAADC. Speaking to reporters at the airport lounge, Pradyot Kishore described the judicial intervention as a “moral victory” for the indigenous people.
Key highlights of his reaction included:
- Constitutional Rights: He emphasized that denying elections for years was a violation of the constitutional rights of the Tiprasa people, as it stalled developmental funds at the grassroots level.
- Empowering the TTAADC: Pradyot stated that without elected Village Councils, the District Council remains “teethless” in implementing rural schemes effectively.
- Call for Immediate Action: He urged the State Election Commission and the Government of Tripura to comply with the court’s directives without further delay to ensure a democratic setup in the hills.
”No More Excuses”
In his characteristic candid style, the Tipra Motha leader remarked that the legal system has finally acknowledged the plight of the rural populace.
”We have been demanding these elections for a long time. The administration cited various reasons for the delay, but the Supreme Court’s intervention brings a ray of hope. Our fight is for the ‘Bubagra’ (king) to see his people empowered with their own elected representatives,” said Pradyot Kishore Debbarma.
Political Significance
The demand for Village Council elections has been a major political plank for Tipra Motha. Observers believe that the Supreme Court’s stance will put significant pressure on the state government to finalize the electoral rolls and announce the polling dates within the stipulated timeframe.
The Supremo’s arrival and immediate statement have energized the party cadre, who see this as a crucial step toward achieving their agenda of “Greater Tipraland” through administrative strengthening.
