On the eve of International Mother Language Day, the political landscape in Tripura heated up as the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) launched a scathing attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Gathering in massive numbers in front of the Congress Bhavan in Agartala, party leaders and workers staged a vibrant protest, accusing the Central Government of practicing “linguistic terrorism” by allegedly attempting to forcibly impose Hindi as the national language.
The protest comes at a sensitive time, as the state prepares to honor the martyrs of the language movement. Congress leaders argued that the diversity of India, especially in the North East where languages like Bengali and Kokborok are central to identity, is under threat by the “One Nation, One Language” agenda.
”Linguistic Terrorism” Under Fire
Addressing the gathering, senior Congress leaders condemned the recent statements and policy pushes by Amit Shah regarding the use of Hindi in official and educational spheres.
”India is a land of diverse cultures and languages. Forcing one language upon the entire nation is not just undemocratic; it is an act of linguistic terrorism that insults our roots,” a spokesperson stated during the demonstration.
The protesters raised slogans against the Home Minister and held placards demanding the protection of regional languages. They emphasized that while Hindi is a respected language, it cannot be mandated at the cost of mother tongues that define the soul of regional communities.
Tensions High in Agartala
The area surrounding the Tripura Pradesh Congress Bhavan saw a heavy deployment of security forces as hundreds of activists joined the sit-in. The timing of the protest is significant, as it precedes February 21st (Bhasha Diwas), a day dedicated to the global recognition of linguistic rights.
The TPCC has vowed to take this movement to every corner of the state, ensuring that the voice of the people of Tripura—and their right to speak their mother tongue—remains uncompromised.
