AGARTALA: Escallating their political offensive against the current economic situation, the CPI(M) Sadar Sub-Divisional Committee organized a massive protest rally in the capital city today. The demonstration was triggered by yesterday’s sudden overnight surge in fuel rates—which pushed petrol prices past ₹100 per litre in Tripura—and the resulting cascading effect on the prices of vegetables and essential commodities.
Hundreds of party workers, youth activists, and common citizens marched through the major thoroughfares of Agartala, carrying red flags, placards, and raising slogans against both the Central and State governments.
A Massive Outcry Against Inflation
The rally, which commenced from the local party office, covered critical commercial zones of the city before culminating in a mass gathering. The leadership slammed the administrative authorities for failing to control the market forces.
Key Demands Raised by CPI(M):
- Immediate Fuel Relief: The party demanded an immediate roll-back of the recent ₹3.04 per litre hike on petrol and ₹2.51 per litre hike on diesel.
- State Tax Reduction: Leaders urged the State Government to immediately reduce its state-levied VAT on petroleum products to provide instant relief to consumers.
- Market Monitoring: The committee demanded strict administrative tracking of wholesale markets to stop unfair price manipulation of daily groceries, vegetables, and baby food under the guise of the fuel crisis.
“The Common Man is Suffocating”: Sadar Committee Leadership
Addressing the gathering, senior CPI(M) leaders stated that the recent economic policies have pushed the working-class and middle-class families to the brink of survival.
”Yesterday, the government let petrol cross the 100-rupee mark, and today, the price of every essential vegetable in the local markets has shot up. This is not just an administrative failure; it is a direct assault on the pockets of the poor. While the ruling party leaders talk about development, the common citizen is struggling to afford two meals a day. Our democratic protests will intensify across every subdivision if this corporate loot isn’t stopped,” a senior CPI(M) leader stated.
Impact on Agartala Traffic
The large turnout for the rally caused significant vehicular congestion along major arteries, including Post Office Choumuhani, Hamanpukur, and Melarmath. Traffic police personnel had to be deployed in large numbers to divert public transport and emergency vehicles toward alternative routes.
A Growing Wave of Discontent
This demonstration follows a string of protests by various political and social outfits across Agartala over the last 24 hours, including a sit-in by the SUCI at Battala. With transport unions actively discussing potential fare hikes due to the updated diesel rate of ₹89.46 per litre, political analysts suggest that public discontent is likely to grow in the coming days.
