AGARTALA: Facing sudden unemployment, hundreds of rubber plantation and factory workers organized a massive demonstration outside Aranya Bhavan—the state forest department headquarters—in Agartala today. Organized under the banner of the Tripura Government Rubber Plantation Mazdoor Sangh (affiliated with the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh – BMS), the rally was held to protest the abrupt retrenchment of 200 casual and contractual rubber workers.
The protestors gathered in large numbers outside the high-security administrative complex, blocking the entrance gates and raising slogans against the management of the Tripura Rehabilitation Plantation Corporation (TRPC) and the Forest Development Corporation.
Sudden Layoffs Trigger Livelihood Crisis
According to trade union leaders, the 200 affected workers have been rendering continuous service across various state-run rubber plantations and processing centers for years. The sudden termination of their contracts without prior notice or compensation has pushed their families into extreme financial distress.
Key Issues Raised by the Mazdoor Sangh:
- Arbitrary Retrenchment: The union alleged that the decision to lay off 200 workers was taken unilaterally by the administration under the guise of “cost-cutting measures.”
- Violation of Labor Rules: Protesters argued that firing long-serving casual laborers without offering alternative employment opportunities violates basic labor laws.
- Economic Impact: The layoffs come at a time when rising inflation and increased fuel costs have already made survival difficult for daily wage earners in the state.
“Reinstate the Workers Immediately”: BMS Leadership
After hours of demonstration outside the gates, a five-member representative delegation was allowed inside Aranya Bhavan to place a formal deputation before senior forest and TRPC officials.
”These 200 workers are the ones who sweat in the fields to generate revenue for the corporation. Dropping them overnight like garbage is a cruel and unacceptable act. We have made it clear to the authorities: either reinstate every single worker immediately or face an indefinite strike across all rubber processing units in Tripura. We will not allow corporate mismanagement to starve our working-class brothers,” a senior leader of the Mazdoor Sangh stated after the meeting.
Core Demands Outlined in the Deputation
The union submitted a memorandum detailing their core demands to the administration:
- Immediate Reinstatement: The unconditional withdrawal of the retrenchment order for all 200 workers.
- Regularization Roadmap: Formulating a clear, transparent policy to regularize long-serving casual and contractual plantation laborers.
- Clearing Owed Dues: Immediate disbursement of any pending bonuses or daily wage arrears owed to the workers.
- Safety Benefits: Provision of adequate medical benefits and safety gear for field workers handling raw rubber latex.
Official Response from the Administration
Receiving the deputation, senior officials at Aranya Bhavan reportedly assured the delegation that the matter would be actively reviewed. Administrative sources claimed that the layoffs were a temporary measure necessitated by seasonal operational adjustments and a dip in local rubber processing demands.
The management has requested a one-week window to consult with the Ministry of Forest and Welfare to explore alternative solutions. However, the Mazdoor Sangh has warned that if a favorable decision is not reached by next week, they will paralyze rubber transportation across the state.
