UDAIPUR: Imbued with deep spiritual fervor, the auspicious occasion of Phalaharini Kali Puja is being celebrated across Tripura today. A magnificent rush of devotees has been witnessed since early morning at the historic Tripura Sundari Temple in Matabari, Udaipur, one of the 51 sacred Shakti Peethas, where special elaborate rituals and prayers are being performed to mark this highly significant day.
Coinciding with the Jyeshtha Amavasya, this year’s Phalaharini Puja holds immense spiritual weight as it falls on a Saturday, creating the highly auspicious Shonichari Amavasya alignment.
The Essence of Phalaharini Puja
Literally translating to “the remover of bad fruits (karma),” Phalaharini Kali Puja is observed on the new moon night of the Bengali month of Jyeshtha. According to Hindu scriptures, worshipping Adya Shakti on this night completely eradicates the negative consequences of past deeds and blesses devotees with peace, prosperity, and ultimate spiritual liberation (Moksha).
Rituals at Matabari:
- Seasonal Fruit Offerings: In accordance with ancient customs, the core ritual involves offering a colorful variety of local, seasonal summer fruits—such as mangoes, jackfruits, litchis, blackberries, and pineapples—to the deity.
- Maha Arati & Special Bhog: The temple priests performed the mandatory Maha Snan (sacred bath) of Tripura Sundari Maa at dawn, followed by the recitation of Vedic hymns, Chandi Path, and the offering of a specially prepared Chappan Bhog (56 varieties of food items).
- Midnight Tantric Rituals: Being a prime seat of Shakti worship, a specialized midnight Nishi Puja will be performed by the head priests under strict tantric guidelines, drawing sadhus and spiritual seekers from across the region.
Elaborate Arrangements for Devotees
Given the immense influx of pilgrims traveling from Agartala, South Tripura, and neighboring states, the Gomati District Administration and the Temple Managing Committee have put stringent measures in place.
”We have ensured a continuous supply of drinking water, medical desks, and barricaded queues to manage the heavy rush seamlessly. Keeping in mind the prevailing hot weather, special shades have been erected along the banks of the sacred Kalyan Sagar lake. Adequate security personnel and volunteers are deployed around the clock to maintain order,” a senior temple administrative official stated.
Pilgrims were also seen performing traditional rituals along the steps of Kalyan Sagar, feeding the resident sacred tortoises, and lighting earthen lamps to pray for the well-being of their families.
A Historical Intersection of Faith
For the followers of the Ramakrishna-Vivekananda ideology, this day holds a parallel historical significance. It was on this very Jyeshtha Amavasya night in 1873 that Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa performed the historic Shodashi Puja at Dakshineswar, worshipping his spiritual consort Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi as the living embodiment of the Divine Mother. Consequently, special commemorative prayers and discourses are also being hosted at the Ramakrishna Math properties across Tripura today.
