SONAMURA: In a major success under the ongoing anti-narcotics drive, the personnel of the Sonamura Police Station intercepted and seized a massive consignment of contraband items from the Indo-Bangla international border area today. Acting on specific patrolling inputs, the police recovered approximately 30 kilograms of premium-grade dry marijuana (Ganja) left abandoned in the Matinagar border region.
According to sub-divisional police authorities, the estimated market value of the confiscated contraband is pegged at around ₹6 lakh in the illegal cross-border smuggling network.
The Border Interception
Police sources stated that a specialized mobile patrolling team from the Sonamura police station was conducting routine surveillance along the sensitive Matinagar sector. Sensing the movement of the law enforcement officers, the smugglers operating in the dark pockets of the border line managed to flee the spot, abandoning the packed consignment in a secluded jungle patch near the fence.
Key Details of the Seizure:
- Contraband Volume: 30 kg of processed dry marijuana, tightly sealed in waterproof commercial packets.
- Estimated Valuation: Approximately ₹6,00,000 in the grey market.
- Legal Action: Since no claimant or suspect could be apprehended from the immediate vicinity, the entire cache was seized on the spot in strict compliance with the statutory legal procedures under the NDPS Act.
Investigation Launched
Following the seizure, the Sonamura Police Station registered a formal case under relevant sections of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act to trace the origin and destination of the contraband.
”We have initiated a comprehensive investigation to identify the local kingpins and cross-border couriers involved in this specific illegal trade network. Patrolling across all vulnerable border exit corridors under the Sonamura sub-division has been significantly intensified to completely dismantle the smuggling rackets operating in the region,” a senior police official confirmed.
Strengthened Border Vigilance
The border sub-division of Sonamura has long been a key focus area for state and central security agencies looking to curb the illegal trade of narcotics and synthetic drugs. Today’s successful interception is being viewed as a significant dent in the operations of the local syndicates that frequently attempt to exploit the border topography during the monsoon transition.
