AGARTALA: In a proactive move to address the rising graph of highway mishaps and instil road discipline among the masses, a comprehensive state-level seminar on “Tyre & Road Safety” was organized at the campus auditorium of Techno India University (TIU), Tripura. The high-impact educational convention was launched to spread extensive awareness regarding vehicular maintenance, traffic regulations, and responsible road usage among students, youth networks, drivers, transport stakeholders, vehicle owners, and the common public.
The seminar was jointly engineered by the Yuva Vikash Kendra (YVK), Vishwa Yuvak Kendra (New Delhi), Techno India University Tripura, and the apex industrial regulatory body—the Indian Tyre Technical Advisory Committee (ITTAC), New Delhi.
A Multi-Stakeholder Coalition for Safe Highways
The safety convention brought together technical experts from ITTAC and grassroots youth mobilizers from YVK to break down complex automotive safety mechanics into practical, everyday driving tips.
The sessions focused primarily on the technical aspects of accident prevention, which are often overlooked by vehicle owners.
Key Technical Focus Areas Highlighted at the Seminar:
- The Science of Tyre Maintenance: ITTAC engineering executives demonstrated how incorrect tyre pressure, worn-out treads, and delayed wheel alignment act as silent triggers for fatal high-speed blowouts on national highways.
- Deciphering Tyre Codes: Empowering students and drivers to read manufacturing dates and load indexes stamped on rubber walls to avoid buying counterfeit or expired inventory.
- Defensive Driving Techniques: Specialized training modules for commercial transport operators on maintaining safe braking distances during the upcoming monsoon season when road traction drops significantly.
“Youth Must Become Safety Ambassadors”: Minister Bikash Debbarma
The landmark safety convention was inaugurated by Tripura Tribal Welfare, Handloom, Handicrafts, Sericulture, and Statistics Minister Bikash Debbarma, who attended as the Chief Guest. Addressing the massive gathering of engineering and management students, the Minister noted that the presence of young energy is crucial to transforming traffic culture.
”A vehicle is a tool of convenience, but in careless hands, it becomes a weapon of destruction. Our state government is pumping massive resources into building world-class four-lane highways, but infrastructure alone cannot save lives if road users lack discipline.
The presence of hundreds of energetic students here today gives me immense hope. I urge the youth to not only practice defensive driving themselves but to act as safety ambassadors within their families and local neighborhoods. By enforcing tyre checks and helmet compliance at home, you are directly saving lives and fortifying social welfare,” Minister Bikash Debbarma stated during his keynote address.
Academic Leadership Vows Strict Campus Compliance
Attending the session as the Special Guest and Inaugurator, Techno India University Tripura Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Ratan Kumar Saha formally welcomed the national delegates. He announced that TIU Tripura will enforce strict vehicle safety audits for student transport, including mandatory helmet rules and tyre wear checks inside the university parking bays.
Dr. Shiladitya Munshi, Registrar (In-Charge) of Techno India University Tripura, who attended as a Special Guest, extended the formal vote of thanks. He emphasized that integrating industrial technical safety knowledge from bodies like ITTAC into academic spaces bridges the gap between civic duty and corporate responsibility.
The day-long seminar concluded with a live, hands-on tyre inspection clinic inside the campus courtyard, where commercial drivers and student bikers were taught how to check tread depths using baseline tread wear indicators.
