The recent visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Tripura has drawn sharp criticism from the Leader of the Opposition (LoP), Jitendra Chaudhury. As the Home Minister attended official programs and high-level meetings in Agartala, the opposition leader termed the visit a “purely political exercise” that offers nothing to the common people of the state.
Addressing the media, Jitendra Chaudhury raised several pointed questions regarding the timing and purpose of the visit, especially in the context of Tripura’s current socio-economic challenges.
Key Points of the Opposition’s Reaction:
- Hollow Promises: The LoP alleged that previous visits by central leaders have only resulted in hollow promises. He pointed out that core issues like the unemployment crisis, pending 7th Pay Commission arrears for state employees, and the rising inflation remained unaddressed in the Minister’s agenda.
- Linguistic Concerns: Referring to the Rajbhasha Sammelan, Chaudhury accused the Union Minister of promoting a “singular linguistic identity” that threatens the diverse fabric of the North East. He emphasized that the focus should instead be on the development of Kokborok and other indigenous languages.
- Political Motives over Governance: The LoP suggested that the visit was more about internal BJP strategies and alliance management with TIPRA Motha and IPFT ahead of the TTAADC elections, rather than administrative governance.
- Law and Order: Chaudhury also took a dig at the state of law and order, claiming that “the Home Minister’s presence in a state where democratic voices are suppressed is ironic.”
”People are Disillusioned”
The senior CPIM leader stated that the people of Tripura are no longer swayed by high-profile visits and grand events at the Hapania Fairgrounds.
”While the city is decorated for the Minister, the villages are suffering from a lack of work and basic amenities. This visit is nothing but a move to boost the morale of a fading party cadre,” Chaudhury remarked.
The opposition has demanded that the Central Government release a “white paper” on what Tripura has actually gained from such high-profile ministerial visits over the last few years.
