Abhishek Sharma, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) opener, etched his name in the history books on April 12 with a stunning display of skill and determination in the Indian Premier League (IPL). During a match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Uppal Stadium, Abhishek made headlines by scoring the highest individual score by an Indian player in the history of the IPL.
The talented batsman scored a phenomenal 141 runs in just 55 balls, including 14 boundaries and 10 sixes, at an impressive strike rate of 256.36. This remarkable innings surpassed the previous record held by KL Rahul, who scored 132 runs for Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2020.
Abhishek’s performance also ranks as the third-highest individual score in IPL history, behind Chris Gayle’s 175* for RCB in 2013 and Brendon McCullum’s innings in the inaugural season of the IPL in 2008.
Not only did Abhishek break records for individual scores, but he also set new milestones for SRH. His 116 runs in boundaries broke Jonny Bairstow’s record, while his 10 sixes surpassed David Warner’s previous record of eight in an innings.
In the match, PBKS won the toss and chose to bat first, posting a challenging total of 245/6 in their 20 overs. SRH’s Harshal Patel and Eshan Malinga were among the wicket-takers in a high-scoring encounter.
In response, Abhishek and Travis Head (66) put together a formidable partnership of 171 runs, setting the stage for a remarkable run chase. Abhishek continued his onslaught, with contributions from Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan Kishan, as SRH successfully chased down the target of 246 runs.
The thrilling match also marked the second-highest run chase in IPL history, with PBKS holding the record for the highest chase against Kolkata Knight Riders in the previous season.
With this victory, SRH climbed to the eighth spot in the IPL standings with two wins and four losses, while PBKS sits in sixth place with three wins and two losses. Abhishek Sharma’s record-breaking innings will surely be remembered as one of the most memorable moments in IPL history.
