Agartala: To ensure that the state capital remains protected from waterlogging and river overflows during the upcoming monsoon season, Kiran Gitte (IAS), Secretary of the Urban Development Department, conducted a high-level field inspection today, March 14, 2026.
Accompanied by West Tripura District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar, SDM, and other senior officials from the Agartala Smart City Limited (ASCL) and Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC), Secretary Gitte reviewed the progress of critical drainage and embankment projects.
Key Highlights of the Inspection:
- Securing Waterways: The team inspected the ongoing cleaning and desilting operations at the Katakhal Canal and the Howrah River, which serve as the primary drainage arteries for the city.
- Embankment Construction: A major focus of the visit was the construction of a 650-meter embankment along the Howrah River. This project fulfills a commitment made by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha to prevent the river from flooding residential areas during heavy downpours.
- Border Area Survey: The officials also visited border-adjacent areas to identify potential “backflow” issues and ensure that cross-border water channels are clear of obstructions.
- Pumping Efficiency: Secretary Gitte assured that all major pumping stations are being upgraded and tested to ensure that excess rainwater can be drained from the city streets within one hour of a heavy rainfall event.
- Smart City Integration: The visit emphasized the use of real-time monitoring under the Smart City project to track water levels and coordinate emergency responses.
