Agartala | February 21, 2026
After a long hiatus of nearly a year and a half, the vital cross-border communication link between India and Bangladesh is back on track. The Agartala-Dhaka-Kolkata ‘Maitree’ bus service, which had been suspended since September 2024 due to political instability and security concerns in Bangladesh, saw its official trial run begin today.
The service was originally halted to ensure the safety of passengers during a period of significant unrest in the neighboring country. However, following the formation of a stable government in Bangladesh led by Tarique Rahman, and the subsequent simplification of visa procedures between India and Bangladesh, the authorities have decided to restore the service.
Trial Run and Official Launch
On Saturday morning, a trial run from Agartala to Dhaka was initiated to test the route and coordination. Samar Roy, Vice Chairman of the Tripura Road Transport Corporation (TRTC), briefed the media during the trial run’s departure.
”The safety of our passengers is our priority. With stability returning to Bangladesh and visa processes becoming easier, we are happy to restart this service. Today is the trial run, and we will begin full-scale commercial operations with passengers starting from February 28,” said Samar Roy.
A Boost to Connectivity
The resumption of this bus service is expected to bring immense relief to:
- Medical Patients: Thousands who travel from Tripura to Kolkata via Dhaka for affordable treatment.
- Trade & Tourism: Businessmen and tourists who rely on this cost-effective and time-saving route.
- Cultural Ties: Families split across the border who can now travel more conveniently.
The TRTC officials confirmed that all security protocols have been reviewed, and the buses are ready to cater to the expected high demand. Booking counters are anticipated to open shortly for the February 28th journey.
