Agartala | March 2, 2026
With Dol Purnima set to be celebrated across Tripura on March 3 and Holi on March 4, the local markets in Agartala have transformed into a riot of colors. Traders in major hubs like Maharajganj Bazar, Battala, and Lake Chowmuhani have reported a significant surge in customers as residents gear up for the two-day festivities.
The festive atmosphere is palpable, with stalls overflowing with various types of abir (colored powder), water guns, and organic colors.
Market Buzz and Variety
Business owners have expressed satisfaction with the customer turnout this year. After a few years of subdued celebrations, the 2026 festive season has brought back high demand.
- Organic Colors in Demand: Merchants noted a shift in consumer preference toward organic and herbal colors to avoid skin irritation.
- Innovative Water Guns: For children, the market is stocked with high-tech water guns (pichkaris) and backpacks themed after popular cartoon characters.
- Price Trends: Despite a slight increase in the cost of raw materials, traders have kept prices competitive to maintain the shopping momentum.
Traders’ Perspective
Speaking to our reporter, a local seller at Maharajganj Bazar shared:
”The response has been excellent since this morning. People are buying in bulk for their families and neighborhood parties. The ‘Abeer’ and ‘Gulal’ packets are flying off the shelves. We expect the rush to peak by this evening as the Purnima Tithi begins.”
Beyond Colors: A Festive Economic Boost
The impact of Dol Purnima is not limited to colors alone.
- Sweets and Savories: Traditional sweet shops are witnessing long queues for Malpua, Sandesh, and other festive delicacies.
- Apparel: Several garment stores have launched ‘Holi Collections,’ featuring white ethnic wear, which has become a trend for color-play events.
- Event Venues: Local clubs and private resorts near the city are reporting full bookings for Holi-themed pool parties and DJ nights scheduled for the next two days.
Safety First
The state administration and Tripura Police have already intensified patrolling in the city to ensure a safe and peaceful celebration. Citizens are urged to play with eco-friendly colors and be mindful of public safety, especially in congested lanes.
