AGARTALA: Taking a decisive step toward urban discipline and pedestrian safety, the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has launched a city-wide mega eviction drive to remove illegal businesses and encroachments from public footpaths. The operation, which began on February 3, saw the direct presence and supervision of the Hon’ble Mayor Shri Dipak Majumder at several key locations, including commercial hubs and busy market areas.
The Enforcement Action: “Pedestrians First”
The AMC Task Force, equipped with heavy machinery and supported by state police, carried out the operation in multiple phases. The drive targeted unauthorized makeshift shops, permanent extensions of commercial buildings, and illegal street vendors who had occupied government land, effectively blocking pedestrian movement and causing severe traffic congestion.
Speaking to the media during the drive, Mayor Dipak Majumder reiterated the administration’s commitment to making Agartala a “Smart City.”
“Footpaths are meant for walking, and roads are for vehicles. We have received numerous complaints from citizens about the difficulty of walking on the streets due to illegal occupations. We gave everyone sufficient time and prior notice to vacate voluntarily. Today’s action is necessary to ensure that Agartala remains clean, disciplined, and safe for everyone,” the Mayor stated.
Key Highlights of the Drive:
- Demolition of Obstructions: Unauthorized concrete structures, stairs, and fences built over drains and footpaths were dismantled in areas like Math Chowmuhani, Battala, and Lake Chowmuhani.
- Zero Tolerance for Illegal Parking: In coordination with the Traffic Department, the Mayor also oversaw the removal of vehicles parked on covered drains, which hampers drainage maintenance.
- Vending License Enforcement: The Mayor clarified that while the government supports small businesses, only those with valid AMC vending licenses operating in designated areas will be allowed.
- Focus on Traffic Hotspots: High-traffic zones were prioritized to alleviate the daily gridlock faced by commuters.
Rehabilitation and Future Plans
While the drive has sparked some resentment among small traders, the Mayor assured that the move is not aimed at snatching livelihoods but at organizing the city. He mentioned that the AMC is working on developing designated vending zones where registered vendors can operate without obstructing public space.
Mayor Majumder also noted that this drive follows direct instructions from Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha to transform the capital into a modern urban center. The AMC has warned that the task force will remain active, and any attempt to re-occupy the cleared areas will lead to strict legal action and hefty fines.
