The arrests came after a video went viral on social media showing AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam allegedly making pro-Pakistan statements. In the video, Islam is heard saying, “Pakistan Zindabad” and praising the neighboring country’s military strength.
Following the video’s circulation, Assam Police conducted raids in various districts and arrested the six individuals mentioned earlier. They have been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code for promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc.
AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam has denied making any pro-Pakistan statements and claimed the video was doctored to defame him. The party has also come out in support of Islam, stating that he has always been a loyal citizen of India.
Meanwhile, the arrests have sparked a debate in the state with some supporting the police’s actions while others criticizing it as an attack on freedom of speech. The Chief Minister of Assam has defended the arrests, stating that anyone supporting Pakistan in the aftermath of a terror attack on Indian soil will face strict action.
The investigation is ongoing and more arrests are expected as authorities continue to monitor social media activities for any signs of pro-Pakistan sentiments. The Assam Police have urged the public to report any suspicious online behavior that may be seen as promoting or defending Pakistan.
The incident has once again highlighted the tensions between India and Pakistan and the repercussions of expressing support for the neighboring country in India. The arrested individuals are currently in police custody and will face legal proceedings in the coming days.
