AGARTALA: Continuing its stern “zero-tolerance” policy against illegal encroachments, the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) launched a massive eviction drive in the Math Chowmuhani area today. The operation specifically targeted unauthorized commercial structures and makeshift stalls that had occupied government land and footpaths in front of the HDFC Bank branch, causing severe congestion in the East Zone of the city.
The Enforcement Action
The drive was carried out by the AMC Task Force in coordination with local police and officials from the Corporation’s East Zone. The task force utilized heavy machinery to dismantle extended portions of shops and concrete structures that had been illegally constructed over public pathways.
For months, commuters and pedestrians had complained about the narrowing of the road near the HDFC Bank at Math Chowmuhani, where several business establishments had allegedly encroached upon the footpath, forcing people to walk on the busy main road at great personal risk.
Leadership on the Ground
The operation was supervised by Corporator Sukhamoy Saha, who stated that the move was necessary to reclaim public spaces for the citizens of Agartala.
“No one is above the law. We have repeatedly issued warnings and notices to these business owners, but they continued to occupy government land illegally. Today’s action is a clear message: public footpaths are for pedestrians, not for private business extensions. We are committed to making Agartala a Smart City, and that begins with clear roads,” Sukhamoy Saha told the media.
Key Highlights of the Drive:
- Demolition of Obstructions: Several permanent and semi-permanent structures, including duplicate fences and flower gardens built on the footpath, were demolished.
- East Zone Vigilance: The AMC officials confirmed that this drive is part of a broader “Encroachment-Free City” mission initiated under the direction of Mayor Dipak Majumder.
- Task Force Support: A sizable contingent of the AMC Task Force was deployed to prevent any untoward incidents or resistance from the traders.
Traders vs. Administration
While many local residents welcomed the move to clear the bottleneck, some affected small-scale traders expressed distress, claiming they had no other means of livelihood. However, the AMC officials maintained that authorized vendor license holders are the only ones permitted to operate in designated zones, and unauthorized occupation of high-traffic footpaths will not be tolerated.
The Corporation has warned that similar drives will be conducted in other congested pockets of the East Zone over the coming week. The administration has urged all business owners to voluntarily remove any structures extending onto government land to avoid forceful demolition and hefty fines.
