AGARTALA: Asserting that the Bengali community in Tripura is being systematically marginalized through “administrative conspiracies,” the Amra Bangali party held a crucial press conference today at its state headquarters. The party leadership issued a stern warning to both the State and Central governments, demanding an immediate end to policies that they claim label the Bengali “sons of the soil” as outsiders or infiltrators.
“Identity Under Threat”
Addressing the media, Amra Bangali State Secretary Shri Gauranga Rudra Pal and other senior leaders alleged that a narrative is being intentionally fueled by certain political forces to create communal divides. They expressed deep concern over recent instances where Bengali-speaking citizens were reportedly harassed or faced documentation hurdles under the pretext of citizenship verification.
“Bengalis have been the backbone of Tripura’s modernization, culture, and economy since before Independence. Yet today, there is a deep-rooted conspiracy to strip us of our constitutional rights. We are not refugees; we are the rightful inhabitants of this land, and we will not tolerate any attempt to brand us as foreigners,” Gauranga Rudra Pal stated.
8-Point Charter of Demands
The party placed a comprehensive 8-point demand list before the government, threatening to intensify their movement if no action is taken:
- Creation of Bangalistan: The demand for a self-sufficient socio-economic zone for Bengalis under the 7th Schedule of the Constitution.
- Formation of Bengali Regiment: Immediate reintroduction of the Bengali Regiment in the Indian Army, on par with the Sikh or Maratha regiments.
- 100% Local Employment: Implementation of the PROUT (Progressive Utilization Theory) philosophy to ensure 100% job guarantee for local youth in the state.
- Ending Citizenship Harassment: An unconditional halt to the NRC/CAA-related harassment of Bengalis and the granting of permanent nationality to all Bengali immigrants without question marks.
- Judicial Probe into 1980 Riots: A fresh judicial investigation into the ethnic violence of June 1980 to ensure proper compensation and justice for the victims.
- Protection of Language: Mandatory use of the Bengali language in all official and non-official works across the proposed socio-economic zone.
Criticism of Tipra Motha & Government Silence
The leadership did not mince words when criticizing the Tipra Motha, an ally of the ruling BJP. They accused the party of using “divisive slogans” to create fear among the non-tribal population. They also questioned the silence of the state government regarding recent inflammatory remarks that allegedly targeted the Bengali community in the hills.
Roadmap for Struggle
The press conference concluded with the announcement of a phase-wise agitation. Amra Bangali plans to hold village-level meetings and mass rallies across all eight districts of Tripura starting next week. The leaders urged all Bengalis, regardless of their political affiliations, to unite under a single platform to safeguard their future generations from “socio-political extinction.”
