Khowai, Tripura: In a major crackdown on illegal smuggling, Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with the Customs Department, recovered a huge consignment of contraband cigarettes in the general area of Chakmaghat, near Teliamura, on 29 September 2025.
The operation was launched at 0915 hours and concluded at 1330 hours, based on specific intelligence inputs from own sources and the 11 WEU. During the operation, a Tata Motors truck bearing registration number TR-01-AP-1717 was intercepted and thoroughly searched.
Security forces recovered 6.5 lakh cigarettes (65 cartons) from the vehicle. The seized contraband is estimated to be worth approximately Rs. 65 lakh in the international market.
During the operation, the driver, Giashuddin (36), son of Maynul Haque and a resident of Baitakhal Basti, Patharkandi, Karimganj district of Assam, was apprehended.
The apprehended individual along with the seized contraband cigarettes has been handed over to the Customs Department for further investigation and necessary legal action.
Assam Rifles reiterated that, in close coordination with enforcement agencies, it remains firmly committed to curbing illegal activities and ensuring security and economic stability in the region.
