Assam TMC faces internal turmoil as state chief Romen Chandra Borthakur is accused of misusing 80% of poll funds, sparking a bitter feud.
The Assam TMC : The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) is embroiled in a significant internal conflict. State president Romen Chandra Borthakur stands accused of misappropriating over 80% of funds allocated for panchayat elections across several districts.
Allegations Surface Amidst Internal Strife
The controversy came to light when Borthakur filed a police complaint against senior vice president Dulu Ahmed, alleging threats and abuse. According to the complaint lodged at Dispur Police Station, Ahmed and his associate Sanjib Mahanta allegedly sent vulgar and threatening messages via WhatsApp, demanding a response by May 12.
In response, Ahmed accused Borthakur of misusing over ₹15 lakh intended for party candidates in districts like Goalpara, Mankachar, Boko-Chaygaon, Samaria, Barpeta, Nalbari, and Bajali. He further alleged that Borthakur failed to support party workers in his home district of Tinsukia and was absent during critical campaign phases, reportedly staying in Kolkata.
Party Morale at Risk
Ahmed claims that Borthakur’s actions have weakened the party structure and demoralized workers. He also alleged that Borthakur attempted to cause a breakdown by collaborating with the Congress, citing a reported meeting with senior Congress leader Harish Rawat.
Borthakur, in his complaint, stated that the threats he received are serious enough to endanger his life. He has sought police protection and intends to escalate the matter to senior party leadership and national law enforcement agencies.
Implications for Upcoming Elections
With the first phase of panchayat elections already concluded on May 30, the ongoing internal strife casts a shadow over the party’s performance in the remaining phases. The Assam TMC’s internal discord threatens to destabilize the party at a crucial time.
