Guwahati, April 10 (IANS): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday that the state government will invest Rs 142 crore in constructing a state-of-the-art hostel for women working at the upcoming Tata Semiconductor facility in Jagiroad, Morigaon district.
Chief Minister Sarma stated that the working women’s hostel will accommodate over a thousand women, supporting them in their careers. He emphasized that this initiative goes beyond providing a physical structure; the hostel will symbolize “Nari Shakti” (women’s power), offering a safe and empowering environment where women can pursue their aspirations.
The hostel will feature modern amenities designed to cater to the needs of working women. These include spacious bedrooms, leisure rooms for relaxation and community building, a creche for working mothers to ensure their children are well-cared for, and a library to facilitate intellectual growth. A central common area will encourage interaction and a sense of community among residents. The facility will also include a mess hall providing nutritious meals. To ensure the safety of the residents, the hostel will be equipped with robust boundary walls with sound barriers, CCTV surveillance, and security guard rooms.
The Chief Minister highlighted the significance of the upcoming Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt. Ltd. (TSAT) facility, describing it as India’s first indigenous and greenfield semiconductor assembly and test facility and a catalyst for progress in the North Eastern Region. The project is backed by the Indian government’s Semiconductor Policy, the India Semiconductor Mission, and the Electronics Policy of Assam, demonstrating a strong push toward achieving self-reliance in semiconductor technology. TSAT is seen as more than just a business venture; it represents a fusion of innovation, investment, and inclusive development.
The project received approval from the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on February 29, 2024, underscoring the government’s commitment to balanced regional development. Construction is set to begin this year, with the first phase expected to be operational by mid-2025. The facility is projected to stimulate industrialization, create employment opportunities, and enhance skill development across the region.
