In response to the recent imposition of tariffs by the United States on Bangladeshi goods, the Chief Advisor of the interim government in Bangladesh, Professor Muhammad Yunus, has convened an emergency meeting to discuss the implications and potential countermeasures.
The information was made public through a post on the verified Facebook page of the Chief Advisor’s Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam, earlier today at approximately 1:45 PM IST.
According to Shafiqul Alam’s post, the urgent meeting is scheduled to take place tonight at 7:30 PM at the state guest house, যমুনা (Jamuna).
The emergency meeting will be attended by key advisors, leading economic experts, and high-ranking government officials, as stated by Shafiqul Alam.
The United States, under President Donald Trump, announced on Thursday a significant 37 percent retaliatory tariff on Bangladeshi products. This move is part of a broader tariff regime targeting goods from a majority of countries globally. President Trump’s administration has stated that higher tariffs are being imposed on nations with which the US has a larger trade deficit. This decision has triggered widespread concern and discussions across the world, with various countries initiating measures to address the impact of the US tariffs. Bangladesh is also taking proactive steps to assess and respond to this development.
The emergency meeting called by Chief Advisor Professor Yunus underscores the seriousness with which Bangladesh is viewing the newly imposed US tariffs and the urgency to formulate a comprehensive strategy to mitigate any potential negative economic consequences for the country and its export sector.
