Bangladesh observes its Independence Day on March 26th, commemorating the declaration of independence by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the early hours of March 26, 1971, which marked the beginning of the Liberation War of Bangladesh. The war culminated in Bangladesh’s victory on December 16, 1971, now celebrated as Victory Day.
This year, while the day was observed with due solemnity, the scale of celebrations was notably different, reflecting a shift in the way Bangladesh marks this historic occasion. In Agartala, the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission held a ceremony to honor the day. Assistant High Commissioner Arif Muhammad hoisted the national flag of Bangladesh and expressed deep gratitude for the support extended by the people of Tripura during the Liberation War.
The Liberation War, which lasted nine months, was a pivotal moment in Bangladesh’s history. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s declaration of independence, made just before his arrest by the Pakistani army, galvanized the nation and led to the war that resulted in Bangladesh’s freedom. The annual observance of this day is a testament to the nation’s enduring respect for its history and the sacrifices made during the war.
