The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken proactive measures to prevent future stampede incidents like the tragic one that occurred during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru victory celebrations. The incident on 4 June near M Chinnaswamy stadium resulted in 11 fatalities and 56 injuries, prompting the BCCI to form a three-member committee to devise guidelines aimed at preventing such occurrences.
The committee, led by BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia and including Vice-President Rajeev Shukla and Treasurer Prabhtej Singh Bhatia, has been given a 15-day deadline to formulate comprehensive guidelines. The BCCI stated in a media release, “In light of the incident that occurred during the victory celebrations in Bengaluru, the Apex Council has decided to constitute a committee to formulate comprehensive guidelines aimed at preventing such occurrences in the future.”
In response to the stampede, the Karnataka High Court has established a single judge commission to investigate the incident, with FIRs filed against RCB and the state cricket association. This underscores the seriousness of the situation and the necessity for thorough safety planning.
Furthermore, the BCCI announced the formation of a Working Group of five ‘Umpire Coaches’ to enhance umpiring standards. The release stated, “These five ‘Umpire Coaches’ must possess international umpiring experience and have served as former umpires,” indicating a commitment to improving the quality of officiating in cricket matches.
The council also established a Working Group comprising three match referees to monitor and develop referees, with the aim of providing opportunities for performance improvement. This demonstrates the BCCI’s dedication to maintaining high standards in cricket officiating.
During a somber meeting, members of the BCCI Council expressed deep sorrow over the tragic air crash in Ahmedabad, which claimed 270 lives, and paid their respects to the victims of the Bengaluru stampede. These acknowledgments were part of a meeting focused on addressing recent tragedies and implementing measures for future prevention.
The establishment of these committees and groups highlights the BCCI’s proactive approach to addressing safety concerns and enhancing the officiating framework in Indian cricket. Through these initiatives, the BCCI aims to ensure the safety of fans and improve the overall quality of cricket officiating in the country.
