BJP MP Nishikant Dubey’s comments about former Chief Election Commissioner SY Quraishi regarding the Waqf Amendment Act have sparked controversy amid ongoing criticism of the judiciary.
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey has drawn criticism for his remarks directed at former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) SY Quraishi, adding to a series of controversial statements made by the MP.
Dubey’s comments came in response to a post by Quraishi on X regarding the Waqf Amendment Act. Dubey referred to Quraishi as “not an Election Commissioner, but a Muslim Commissioner.” He also alleged that a large number of Bangladeshi infiltrators obtained voter IDs in Jharkhand’s Santhal Pargana division, part of Dubey’s constituency, during Quraishi’s tenure as CEC (July 30, 2010, to June 10, 2012).
Dubey’s post also included a brief historical account of Islam’s arrival in India and emphasized the importance of national unity.
This exchange follows Dubey’s recent criticism of the Supreme Court and Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, where he questioned the court’s authority and accused CJI Khanna of causing “civil wars” in the country.
The BJP has distanced itself from Dubey’s earlier controversial remarks against the judiciary. Party president J.P. Nadda stated on X that the BJP “has nothing to do with the comments of MPs Nishikant Dubey and Dinesh Sharma on the judiciary and the Chief Justice of India.” Nadda described these as “personal comments” and affirmed that the BJP “neither agrees with them nor does it ever support such remarks,” categorically rejecting them. BJP MP Dinesh Sharma had also recently criticized the Supreme Court, asserting that no one can direct Parliament or the President.
