In a significant move towards peace-building and inclusive development, the Central government has allocated Rs 250 crore for the upliftment of tribal communities in Tripura. This funding comes as part of the Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) signed with two formerly banned insurgent outfits — the National Liberation Front of Twipra (NLFT) and the All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF).
The announcement of this decision was made by Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who stated that the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a new component under the existing Special Development Package for Tripura to implement the provisions of the MoS.
The historic peace agreement was signed on September 4, 2024, and saw over 328 armed cadres of the NLFT and ATTF laying down their arms to join the mainstream. The primary goal of this initiative is to support the rehabilitation of former insurgents and to uplift marginalized tribal populations through various development interventions.
“This fund will play a crucial role in improving the socio-economic status of vulnerable and marginalized groups, especially those who have been excluded from previous welfare schemes,” Dr. Saha emphasized. He highlighted that the package will focus on creating more employment opportunities, enhancing access to healthcare and education, promoting skill development, and boosting livelihoods for youth and women in tribal areas.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister pointed out that the funding will also help in promoting tourism in Tripura and the Northeast region, thereby creating additional employment and income opportunities for local communities.
The peace accord and the accompanying development funding are viewed as crucial steps towards ensuring long-term peace, stability, and progress in Tripura. They also underscore the Central government’s commitment to the overall transformation of the Northeast region.
