Chief Advisor Md Yunus of Bangladesh’s illegitimate interim government is set to meet with Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting chairman Tareq Rahaman in London on June 13 in an effort to ease tensions and address the growing isolation Yunus is facing due to his handling of the upcoming election to the National Assembly.
Yunus, who arrived in London earlier this week, is hoping to mend relations with the major opposition party after BNP’s strong reaction to the election schedule announced for June 2026. The meeting, which is being seen as a significant political development, will be an opportunity for both leaders to discuss a range of issues, including politics, election reform, and the July charter.
According to Yunus’ media advisor Shariful Haq, there is no specific agenda for the meeting, but both leaders will have the opportunity to decide what they want to discuss. The meeting is expected to be attended by Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary Azad Majumder and Bangladesh High Commission Minister (Press) in London Akbar Hossain.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed hope that the meeting will help overcome the political crisis in Bangladesh and create new possibilities. He described the meeting as a “major political event” and emphasized the importance of resolving the challenges facing the country’s political landscape.
Tareq Rahaman, who has been formally invited to the meeting, welcomed the initiative and expressed optimism that it will have a positive impact. The meeting is scheduled to take place at the hotel where Yunus is currently staying in London, and BNP’s Standing Committee members have already discussed and approved of the upcoming meeting.
Overall, the meeting between Yunus and Tareq Rahaman is being closely watched as a potential turning point in Bangladesh’s political situation, with hopes that it will lead to constructive dialogue and progress towards resolving the country’s political challenges.
