News Report:
Agartala, Tripura: The state committee of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) organised a gan-obosthan (sit-in protest) on December 20 in front of the Labour Department office at Office Lane, Agartala, opposing the central government’s labour codes and demanding their withdrawal.
The protest focused on concerns raised by trade unions regarding the impact of the labour codes on workers’ rights, job security, and social protection. CITU leaders stated that the codes would adversely affect labour welfare and weaken collective bargaining, urging the government to repeal them.
The programme was attended by senior leaders, including former Member of Parliament Shankar Prasad Dutta and former Power Minister Manik Dey, along with other trade union representatives and workers.
Addressing the gathering, speakers reiterated the demand for safeguarding workers’ interests and called for continued democratic movements against policies they believe undermine labour rights. The sit-in concluded peacefully under police supervision.
