AGARTALA: In a major political move aimed at countering the current administration’s rural policies, the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) held a high-profile press conference today at the Pradesh Congress Bhavan. Led by TPCC President Shri Ashish Kumar Saha and joined by senior spokesperson Shri Prabir Chakraborty, the leadership outlined a series of protest programs and shared the party’s stance on upcoming state events.
Restoring Rural Rights: The ‘Raj Bhavan Abhiyan’
President Ashish Kumar Saha announced that the Congress party will launch a massive ‘Raj Bhavan Abhiyan’ (March to Governor’s House) on February 16, 2026. The primary focus of this march is to demand the immediate reinstatement of the MGNREGA scheme in its original form.
“Under the BJP rule, the basic rights of the common people are being systematically dismantled. While the UPA government empowered the rural poor by providing a legal guarantee to work, the current government has snatched it away. We will march to Raj Bhavan on the 16th to reclaim the rights of our workers,” Ashish Kumar Saha stated.
The march, also referred to as the ‘Lok Bhavan Abhiyan’, will culminate in the submission of a memorandum to the Governor, highlighting how the “dilution” of MGNREGA has crippled the rural economy.
Moral Support for February 12 Strike
Spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty addressed the nationwide call for a strike on February 12. He clarified that the Congress party has decided to extend its moral support to the strike, which has been called by various trade unions to protest against anti-worker labor codes and rising unemployment. Chakraborty emphasized that the party stands in solidarity with the working class who are facing an “unprecedented financial crisis.”
Dharmanagar By-Election Strategy
Turning toward the electoral front, Ashish Kumar Saha confirmed that the Congress is fully prepared for the upcoming Dharmanagar Assembly by-election.
- Candidate Selection: The party has already begun the process of identifying a strong local candidate.
- Ground Mobilization: Saha noted that the organizational strength in North Tripura is being revitalized to give a “befitting reply” to the ruling party.
- People’s Verdict: He expressed confidence that the voters of Dharmanagar would choose the Congress as an alternative to the “misrule” of the current government.
Conclusion of the Briefing
The Congress leaders concluded by urging their supporters to join the February 16 movement in large numbers. They reiterated that the party would continue to fight against “administrative anarchy” and work toward restoring democratic values in Tripura.
