The aftermath of the recent violence in Shimultali under Fatikroy police station has taken a political turn, with the Congress alleging that its leaders were stopped by the police from visiting the affected area and interacting with victims from the minority community.Congress Legislature Party leader and MLA Birajit Sinha, accompanied by Unakoti District Congress President Md. Badrul Zaman, reached Shimultali on Sunday morning to assess the ground situation following the violent clashes and incidents of arson reported a day earlier. However, the Congress claimed that the police administration prevented them from entering the locality and meeting the affected families.According to reports, Saturday’s violence in Shimultali saw several houses, shops and vehicles belonging to members of the minority community vandalised and set ablaze. The sudden outbreak of unrest allegedly forced many families to flee their homes, leaving the area gripped by fear and insecurity. Even a day later, tension continues to prevail, with residents expressing concerns over their safety.Reacting strongly to the alleged obstruction, Birajit Sinha described the incident as a “gross violation of democratic rights.” He said that preventing elected representatives from speaking to victims raises serious questions about the administration’s intent. “If interacting with people affected by violence is treated as an offence, then democracy is under threat. The administration must clarify what it is trying to hide,” he remarked.Md. Badrul Zaman also criticised the administration, stating that the affected minority families are living in an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty. He alleged that stopping Congress leaders from standing by the victims was not only unfortunate but also indicative of a troubling approach by the authorities.
