Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of running the state with fear, following the arrest of Reetam Singh. Singh, a vocal critic of the BJP government in Assam, has been detained on what Gogoi alleges are trumped-up charges.
Gogoi visited Singh at the Morigaon District Jail during the Bohag Bihu festival and expressed his concerns over what he sees as a pattern of political harassment by the ruling party. He claimed that Singh is being targeted for speaking out against injustice, labeling the legal actions against him as a form of political vendetta.
In a scathing critique of the current state of democracy in Assam, Gogoi stated, “Today, people are afraid to speak out against the BJP government. Leaders like Himanta Biswa Sarma, Jayanta Mallabaruah, Pijush Hazarika, and Manab Deka are trying to keep the people of Assam in a cage of fear. But we are committed to breaking that fear.”
Gogoi also addressed concerns over the upcoming Panchayat elections, acknowledging that Congress workers are working hard and will continue to do so. He assured that all complaints against party leadership during the poll preparations will be taken seriously and submitted to the AICC high command for resolution.
The visit to Reetam Singh and Gogoi’s strong statements have energized the Congress campaign in Assam, particularly as political tensions escalate ahead of the Panchayat polls. Gogoi’s remarks serve as a rallying cry for the opposition party as they gear up to challenge the BJP in the upcoming elections.
