The active COVID-19 cases in India have surged to 2,710, with the majority of infections concentrated in the southern state of Kerala, according to the latest data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. This increase comes after a period of relative calm in the country, with infections seeing a five-fold jump in the week ending May 25, surpassing the 1,000 mark.
As per the data, Kerala has reported the highest number of cases at 1,147, followed by Maharashtra with 424, Delhi with 294, and Gujarat with 223. Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have reported 148 cases each, while West Bengal has reported 116 cases. Additionally, in the last 24 hours, seven deaths have been recorded, bringing the total death toll for the first five months of this year to 22. Maharashtra reported two deaths, while Delhi, Gujarat, Karnataka, Punjab, and Tamil Nadu each reported one death. This marks the first death reported in Delhi during this current wave of infections.
Despite the increase in cases and deaths, the Health Ministry has urged the public not to panic, stating that most of the COVID-19 cases are mild. The Ministry also suggested that Kerala’s high case numbers may be attributed to the state conducting more tests. In a surprising development, Mizoram has reported two new COVID-19 cases, marking the first instances of the virus in the state in seven months.
With cases on the rise once again in India, authorities are emphasizing the importance of following health guidelines, maintaining social distancing, wearing masks, and getting vaccinated to help curb the spread of the virus. As the situation continues to evolve, it is crucial for the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and others from COVID-19.
