The Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Tripura has accused the TIPRA Motha party of betraying tribal people by aligning with the BJP, despite the BJP’s enactment of the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) that TIPRA Motha had previously opposed.
In a strongly-worded statement released on Tuesday, the CPI(M) criticized TIPRA Motha for what it described as an attempt to mislead tribal communities. The CPI(M) alleged that TIPRA Motha’s stance against illegal immigration is hypocritical given their political partnership with the BJP, the party responsible for implementing the CAA.
The CPI(M) questioned how TIPRA Motha, a party claiming to champion indigenous rights, could support a government that undermines previous agreements aimed at curbing illegal immigration. The party accused TIPRA Motha of betraying tribal sentiments and called into question the sincerity of their motives.
Furthermore, the CPI(M) pointed out that despite TIPRA Motha’s participation in the state government and alliance with the BJP, promises made for the development of the Autonomous District Council (ADC) remain unfulfilled. This, according to the CPI(M), demonstrates TIPRA Motha’s failure to deliver on its commitments to tribal communities.
Describing TIPRA Motha’s politics as “opportunistic and misleading,” the CPI(M) called on the people of Tripura, particularly indigenous citizens, to see through the deception and instead support movements focused on issues such as livelihood, employment, food security, public safety, and democracy.
The allegations and criticisms from the CPI(M) highlight the growing tensions and divisions within Tripura’s political landscape, particularly concerning the treatment of indigenous communities and the impact of alliances with controversial parties like the BJP.
