Amarpur | February 5, 2026 Reported by: Tripura 24 News Desk
The daily lives of commuters came to a grinding halt on Thursday as frustrated residents of the Paschim Sambhajay Para area, under the Amarpur RD Block, launched a massive road blockade on the vital Amarpur–Gandacherra thoroughfare. The protest, fueled by years of administrative neglect, highlights the crumbling infrastructure and the parched reality of rural Tripura.
Protest Born from Desperation
Beginning early in the morning, hundreds of villagers, including women and the elderly, sat across the highway, effectively cutting off communication between Amarpur and Gandacherra. The protesters alleged that despite repeated pleas to the authorities regarding the severe drinking water crisis and the deplorable condition of the roads, no concrete action has been taken.
“We are tired of empty promises,” said a local resident. “For months, we have struggled for a single bucket of clean water, and our roads have turned into death traps. If the administration won’t listen to our letters, they will have to listen to our voices on the street.”
Commuters Stranded as Gridlock Ensues
The blockade had an immediate and severe impact on regional logistics:
- Transport Paralysis: Dozens of passenger buses and essential commodity trucks were seen stranded on both sides of the road, stretching for kilometers.
- Public Suffering: Patients heading to the district hospital and office-goers faced extreme hardships as the heat intensified throughout the day.
- Police Intervention: Upon receiving the news, a large contingent from the Birganj Police Station rushed to the spot to mediate. However, the protesters refused to budge without a written assurance from senior administrative officials.
A Systematic Failure of Governance?
The agitation at Paschim Sambhajay Para raises serious questions about the efficiency of the local RD Block and the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department. Residents claim that while the state discusses “Har Ghar Jal,” their taps remain dry and their connectivity remains broken.
As of the latest reports, the blockade continues. While the police have attempted to pacify the crowd, the sub-divisional administration has yet to provide a permanent solution or a timeline for repair work. The protesters have warned that if their basic rights to water and roads are not addressed immediately, they will escalate the movement to the block headquarters.
