AGARTALA: Reacting sharply to the reports of political violence emerging from Kamalpur yesterday, Tripura Pradesh Congress President Ashish Kumar Saha addressed the media today to express his “deep concern and condemnation.” Speaking at the Congress Bhavan, Saha alleged that the state is witnessing a “planned breakdown of law and order” ahead of the crucial TTAADC polls and the Dharmanagar bye-election.
The Congress President’s reaction follows an incident in Kamalpur where opposition workers and local residents were reportedly targeted in a series of late-night confrontations.
Allegations of Political Patronage
During the press conference, Ashish Kumar Saha claimed that the attackers in Kamalpur were identified as supporters of the ruling party and that the local administration failed to intervene effectively.
Key Points from the President’s Reaction:
- Systematic Harassment: Saha alleged that opposition voices in Kamalpur are being systematically intimidated to prevent them from participating in the upcoming electoral process.
- Administrative Silence: He criticized the role of the local police, stating that “passive spectatorship” by law enforcement is encouraging anti-social elements.
- Climate of Fear: The President noted that such incidents are not isolated but reflect a growing trend of political intolerance across the Dhalai and West Tripura districts.
“Voters Will Give a Befitting Reply”
Saha warned that the attempt to “silence” the opposition through muscle power would backfire on the ruling establishment.
”What happened in Kamalpur yesterday is a dark stain on Tripura’s democratic traditions. You cannot win the hearts of the people by terrorizing them in the dead of night. We have already informed the higher authorities and the Election Commission about these developments. The people of Kamalpur and the entire state are watching, and they will give a befitting reply through the ballot box on April 12,” Ashish Kumar Saha asserted.
Call for Immediate Arrests
The Pradesh Congress has demanded the immediate arrest of the individuals named in the FIR related to the Kamalpur incident. Saha also urged the Director General of Police (DGP) to ensure that additional security forces are deployed in sensitive zones of Kamalpur and Ambassa to prevent further escalation.
Dignitaries Present:
The press meet was also attended by senior Congress leaders who expressed solidarity with the victims of the Kamalpur violence and vowed to continue their campaign despite the alleged “state-sponsored intimidation.”
