Agartala | February 21, 2026
The ongoing construction work under the Agartala Smart City Mission has turned into a major health concern for the residents of the state capital. From main thoroughfares to narrow residential lanes, roads across Agartala have been excavated and left in a dilapidated state, leading to an unprecedented rise in dust pollution.
In response to the deteriorating air quality and the administrative delay in completing the projects, the DYFI (Democratic Youth Federation of India) Ramnagar Regional Committee organized a unique protest-cum-service program today.
Mask Distribution at Fire Service Chowmuhani
Members of the youth organization gathered at the busy Fire Service Chowmuhani area to distribute face masks among pedestrians, daily commuters, and rickshaw pullers. The initiative aimed to provide immediate protection to citizens from the thick blanket of dust that has enveloped the city.
Allegations of Administrative Negligence
The DYFI leaders criticized the state government and the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) for the lack of planning in executing the Smart City projects.
”In the name of making Agartala a ‘Smart City,’ the authorities have turned it into a ‘Dust City.’ Every road is dug up, and there is no sprinkling of water or proper maintenance. The health of children and the elderly is at serious risk,” said a spokesperson for the Ramnagar Committee.
Public Outcry Over Road Conditions
Residents have been complaining for months about the respiratory issues and visibility problems caused by the airborne dust. The slow pace of work has not only impacted public health but has also led to frequent traffic snarls and minor accidents due to the uneven road surfaces.
The DYFI has warned of more intensive movements if the authorities do not take immediate steps to mitigate the dust pollution and expedite the road restoration work.
